Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay was born on August 24, 1972, at Long Beach California. DuVernay was motivated to pursue her love of the arts by her aunt Denise when she was a kid. The aunt was on the night shift as a nurse so she could follow her passion for theater and art in the daytime. DuVernay immediately was captivated with the 1959 West Side Story film. DuVernay discovered by watching her mother's model of how art could serve as an activist vehicle. DuVernay's mother also had a social consciousness and taught DuVernay how to convey messages via the medium of art. DuVernay, who grew up with her family in Compton, spent each summer in Lowndes County Alabama in the family home of her father. DuVernay's Father recalled witnessing the historic march of Civil Rights Movement on the Edmund Pettus Bridge. It was held in Selma Alabama, a neighboring city. DuVernay was inspired by her summers in Alabama to help inspire her next film, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay received her high school diploma at Saint Joseph High School, Lakewood California in 1990. She attended University of California Los Angeles for a degree in English and African American Studies. DuVernay was a college student when she started to get attracted to the field of production for broadcast journalism. Her first job was as an intern with CBS News during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay recalled being instructed to take a look at the junk of the home of a juror. The work she was assigned to did not leave her satisfied in journalism, so she made the decision to go into the field of publicity. DuVernay was hired right from college to be an assistant publicist in a small studio. In this role, she launched her own company for public relations known as The DuVernay Agency in 1999. In addition to PR, the company established several lifestyle platforms including Urban Beauty Collective, Urban Thought Collective Urban Eye, HelloBeautiful.
